SAINT OF THE DAY - St. Martin I
St. Martin I
He was born near Todi, Umbria in the Byzantine Empire. The date and year of his birth is not known. He succeeded Pope Theodore-I as pope on July 15, 649. He convened the Lateran Council of 649 that held five sessions from 5th to 31st October 649. This council condemned Monothelitism. (Monothelitism teaches that Jesus Christ had two natures but only one will, divine). But the generally accepted view is that Jesus has two wills both human and divine corresponding to His two natures. But Monothelitism was supported by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius. Emperor Constans-II ordered not to discuss about monothelitism. When Martin-I was busy publishing the results of the Lateran Council, Emperor Constans-II got angry and ordered his Exarch Calliopas to arrest Martin.
Martin-I was arrested on June 17, 653 and was taken to Constantinople. But Paul, the Patriarch of Constantinople pleaded with the Emperor to spare the life of Martin. Therefore Martin was imprisoned for more than two years and then banished to Chersonesos Taurica, where he died on September 16, 655.
